Sauna Region Week of Central Finland goes global

The Sauna Heating World Championship, which first began at Spa Hotel Peurunka in 2016, is now going global with a Japan Cup set to take place in Tokyo in April. “Pop’ Up Sauna Festival” will be organized in the Japanese capital on 12th of April. This is the first time the event has been run outside Finland.

“People in Japan absolutely adore the Finnish sauna! Last year, Metos Inc. were the first to field a team from Japan in our world championship tournament, and this year up to 30 Japanese visitors are now expected to attend. The team enjoyed their experience so much that they decided they wanted to run their own cup in Tokyo as well,” explained Päivi Heikkala, Lakeland – Jyväskylä Region Project Manager at Visit Jyväskylä.

Having played an instrumental role in setting up the Sauna Heating World Championships, Markus Kallio from the Varjola farm has been appointed as the official referee for the Sauna Heating Championship Japan Cup.

“I’m very excited to be taking our sauna culture to Japan. I will be bringing the equipment used to measure the heat of saunas in championships, to ensure that the experience is as authentic as possible for our Japanese competitors,” Markus Kallio commented.

Sauna Region Week sets sights on international expansion

At the Sauna Heating World Championship, the competitors do not themselves enjoy a sauna. Instead, their challenge is to use their experience and skills to heat a specialist sauna tent created by the world’s largest sauna tent manufacturer Savotta up to a set temperature. To help them in their task, each three-strong team will be given an axe, a Finnish puukko knife, matches and firewood. In the qualifying round, the teams will be asked to heat the sauna tent to a temperature of 70–80 °C with the three fastest teams going through to the final.

The main World Championship event will be taking place at Spa Hotel Laukaa in Peurunka on 6thof July. The competition is open to all, with teams invited to sign up at saunaregion.fi. The event is a fun and unique way to spend a summer day together with your friends or family. It is part of the Sauna Region Week, an event that comprises more than 60 sauna-related events across many of the region’s most exciting venues and is a great way for beginners and veteran sauna-goers alike to explore Finnish sauna culture.

“This year’s Sauna Heating World Championship will be run by EXT-Ventures, who is delivering other hugely popular events in Laukaa. The Sauna Heating World Championship in July will form part of a larger public event, and we will be making more information available about what is being planned in April,” added Päivi Heikkala.

In September 2015, Central Finland declared itself the Sauna Region of Finland. The Sauna Region Week was set up as an annual event to give locals and tourist a possibility to test different saunas and sauna treatments. Last year’s Sauna Region Week attracted some 2,000 visitors from Australia, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Mexico, Estonia and Japan as well as Finland.
